DIN 3016 Standard Explained: What It Means for P-Clip Specification

What DIN 3016 means for rubber-lined P-clips — dimensional standards, material requirements, and how to specify clips to this standard for industrial and automotive use.

DIN 3016 is the German industrial standard that defines the dimensional and material requirements for rubber-lined pipe clamps — commonly known as P-clips. It is widely referenced in automotive, marine, rail, and general industrial procurement specifications across Europe. Understanding what the standard covers and what it requires is essential for anyone specifying clips into a DIN 3016-referenced application.

What Is DIN 3016?

DIN 3016 (formally DIN 3016 Rohrschellen) is published by the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) — the German standards body. It defines the design, dimensions, and material grades for rubber-cushioned pipe clamps used in industrial and automotive applications.

The standard was developed as the European automotive and industrial sectors required a common dimensional basis for pipe clamp interchangeability. A clip specified to DIN 3016 at a given nominal diameter will fit a pipe of that OD regardless of which DIN 3016-compliant manufacturer supplied it.

The standard is widely referenced in European procurement even when formal certification is not required, because it provides a common language for clip specification — nominal diameter, band width, fixing hole, and material grade — without needing custom drawings.

DIN 3016 Part 1 vs Part 2

PartReferenceDescription
Part 1DIN 3016-1Standard rubber-lined pipe clamp — plain band profile with single fixing hole. The most commonly specified type, covering general industrial, automotive, and HVAC applications.
Part 2DIN 3016-2Rubber-lined pipe clamp with reinforced (beaded) band profile. The additional bead stiffens the band and increases load capacity, making this variant appropriate for higher-load or larger-diameter applications.

For most general and automotive applications, DIN 3016-1 is the relevant reference. DIN 3016-2 is specified where the heavier band profile is required — this broadly corresponds to our heavy-duty P-clip range.

Standard Dimensions Defined

DIN 3016 specifies a nominal diameter series, with corresponding band widths and fixing hole sizes. The nominal diameter corresponds to the internal diameter of the clip at closure — it should match the outer diameter of the pipe or hose being secured.

Nominal Diameter (mm)Band Width (mm)Fixing Hole
8–1612M4/M5
16–2812M6
28–3812M6/M8
38–50 (heavy duty)19–20M10
50–90 (heavy duty)25M10–M14

Material Requirements

DIN 3016 specifies material grades for both the band and the rubber liner:

  • Band material: mild steel (with appropriate surface protection — typically electroplated zinc) or stainless steel (A2 or A4 grade). The standard does not mandate a specific coating thickness but requires the coating to be adequate for the intended application.
  • Rubber liner: the standard references the liner material grade — EPDM is the most common, and is the liner material used across our range. EPDM meets the oil resistance, temperature range, and weathering requirements defined in the standard for general industrial use.

Specifying to DIN 3016

A complete DIN 3016 clip specification includes:

  • Standard reference: DIN 3016-1 or DIN 3016-2
  • Nominal diameter in mm
  • Band material: steel (zinc-coated) or stainless steel (A2 or A4)
  • Fixing hole size

Example: DIN 3016-1, 22 mm, A2 stainless, M6 — a standard P-clip, 22 mm nominal diameter, in A2 stainless steel, with an M6 fixing hole.

Our P-Clips and DIN 3016

Our P-clips are manufactured by Birmingham Specialities Ltd following the dimensional conventions of DIN 3016, covering the standard nominal diameter series, band widths, and fixing hole sizes. They are available in zinc-coated mild steel and stainless steel, with EPDM rubber lining as standard.

FAQs

What is DIN 3016?
DIN 3016 is a German engineering standard that defines the dimensional and material requirements for rubber-lined pipe and hose clamps (P-clips). It specifies the nominal diameter series, band widths, fixing hole sizes, and material grades for clips used in automotive, industrial, and general engineering applications.
Do all P-clips on the market conform to DIN 3016?
No. DIN 3016 defines a standard series of sizes and requirements, but compliance is not mandatory. Many clips are described as 'DIN 3016 type' to indicate they follow the dimensional convention of the standard, without necessarily being certified to it. For applications requiring certified compliance, request documentation from your supplier.
What is the difference between DIN 3016 Part 1 and Part 2?
DIN 3016-1 covers standard P-clips with the conventional plain band design. DIN 3016-2 covers clips with a reinforced (beaded) band profile, providing greater stiffness and load capacity. Part 2 broadly corresponds to what is marketed as a heavy-duty P-clip.
Are your P-clips manufactured to DIN 3016?
Our P-clips follow the dimensional conventions of DIN 3016, covering the standard nominal diameter series and fixing hole sizes. We can provide documentation on our manufacturing process and material specifications. Contact us for specific compliance documentation requirements.
What does 'DIN 3016 type' mean on a product listing?
'DIN 3016 type' indicates that the clip follows the dimensional format of the standard — the nominal diameter series, band width, and fixing hole sizes are consistent with DIN 3016 specifications. It does not necessarily mean the product has been certified to the standard by a testing body.
