How Many P-Clips Do I Need? Calculating Quantities for Your Run

How to calculate the number of P-clips needed for a cable or hose run — spacing intervals, direction changes, waste allowance, and ordering guide.

Calculating clip quantities before ordering saves time, avoids site delays, and ensures you have enough without significant over-ordering. The calculation is straightforward once you know the run length, the spacing for your application, and the number of direction changes and fittings in the run.

The Calculation Method

For a single continuous run:

  1. Measure the total run length in mm or metres
  2. Choose the correct clip spacing for your application (see table below)
  3. Divide run length by spacing to get intermediate clips. Add 1 for the first clip at the start of the run.
  4. Add extra clips — one per bend or direction change, one per fitting or junction
  5. Add 10% contingency and round up to the nearest whole box quantity
Quick formula Clips = (Run length ÷ Spacing) + 1 + (Number of bends/fittings) × 1.1

Worked Examples

Example 1: Automotive wiring loom, 3 m run, 2 bends

Run length: 3,000 mm. Spacing: 400 mm (medium loom, moderate vibration).
Intermediate clips: 3,000 ÷ 400 = 7.5 → round up to 8, plus 1 for run start = 9 clips.
Add 2 for bends = 11. Add 10%: 11 × 1.1 = 12.1 → order 13 clips.

Example 2: Hydraulic hose run, 5 m, 4 direction changes

Run length: 5,000 mm. Spacing: 200 mm (hydraulic hose).
Intermediate clips: 5,000 ÷ 200 = 25, plus 1 = 26 clips.
Add 4 for direction changes = 30. Add 10%: 30 × 1.1 = 33 → order 33 clips.

Example 3: HVAC copper pipe, 22 mm, 12 m run, 3 bends

Run length: 12,000 mm. Spacing: 1,800 mm (22 mm copper).
Intermediate clips: 12,000 ÷ 1,800 = 6.7 → round up to 7, plus 1 = 8 clips.
Add 3 for bends = 11. Add 10%: 11 × 1.1 = 12.1 → order 13 clips.

Contingency and Stock Allowance

A 10% contingency is a minimum. For larger installations, consider:

  • First-time installations where the exact run length may change during installation
  • Any installation where procurement lead time would cause delays if you run short
  • Sites where clips may be damaged, dropped, or lost during installation

A stock of 10–15% over the calculated quantity is good practice. P-clips have a long shelf life and unused clips can be stored for future maintenance.

FAQs

How do I calculate how many P-clips I need for a run?
Divide the total run length by the chosen clip spacing, add 1 for the run start, add 1 per bend or fitting, then add 10% contingency. Round up to the nearest whole box quantity.
What is the standard spacing for P-clips on a cable loom?
300–500 mm for light cable looms in low-vibration environments. 200–300 mm in high-vibration environments or for heavier looms. Always place a clip within 50 mm of any direction change or fitting.
Should I order extra P-clips as a contingency?
Yes. A 10% contingency allowance is standard practice. Clips are damaged during installation, runs are longer than planned, and direction changes are added. A small stock of the correct specification is always worth keeping.
Do I need the same size clip for the whole run?
Yes — if the hose or cable is a consistent diameter throughout, one clip size covers the whole run. If the run includes different diameters, you will need clips sized for each.
Can I mix P-clip sizes in one order?
Yes. You can order multiple sizes, materials, and fixing hole specifications in the same order. Use the filters on our shop to select each line item separately.
